June 3: Farm management tour media day

Innovation and tradition will be showcased at the 1999 Farm Management Tour, which will be previewed for journalists from 8 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. June 3 at the Farm Management Tour Media Day. Open to all members of the media, the tour is scheduled to visit farms in Posey, Vanderburgh and Gibson counties. Two vans will depart from Purdue on the night of June 2, providing transportation to the southern Indiana site. All others should plan to depart at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 3, from the Denny's restaurant at U.S. 41 and Interstate 64, 10 miles south of Princeton. The media tour will return to Denny's for lunch and then continue the preview. The tour is free, and journalists may join and leave it at any point. To make a lunch reservation and receive a map of the tour stops, contact Chris Sigurdson, News and Public Affairs coordinator in Purdue Agricultural Communications, (765) 494-8415; sig@ecn.purdue.edu. The actual tour, which is free and open to the public, will be July 6 and 7. It gives producers a chance to learn from other producers as host families conduct tours of their facilities and describe their production and management practices.

June 8-11: Home and family conference

More than 700 homemakers and others are expected to attend the 1999 Home and Family Conference at Stewart Center and the Purdue Memorial Union, sponsored by Purdue Extension's Consumer and Family Sciences program. The keynote address will be delivered by Michelle Passoff, author of "LIGHTEN UP! Free Yourself from Clutter." Other activities include seminars on personal finances, child development, gourmet gardening and an introduction to the Internet. The conference is open to the public, and registration is $35 for the whole conference or $25 per day. Housing is available, and early registration is encouraged. June 8, 15, 18 and 22: In-field crop and diagnostic training

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service is presenting a series of in-field diagnostic training clinics throughout the summer to improve farmers' trouble-shooting skills. Hands-on experience at the one-day sessions will focus on identifying, diagnosing and correcting problems associated with corn, soybeans, wheat and other forage crops. Participants will look at problems from the standpoints of fertility, growth and development, as well as disease, insect and weed control. Registration is $90 for the day, which will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. Registration materials are available at the Extension office in each Indiana county. Clinic dates and locations are:

  • June 8: Purdue Agronomy Center, 4540 U.S. 52 W., West Lafayette.
  • June 15: Purdue Agronomy Center, 4540 U.S. 52 W., West Lafayette.
  • June 18: Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center, Vincennes.
  • June 22: Northeast Purdue Agricultural Center, Columbia City.

June 9-11: 4-H science workshops 4-H members in grades 9-12 can participate in one of the seven science workshops sponsored by Purdue. Workshop topics are food, aerospace, animal, plant, mechanical, computer science and ambassador. Each workshop on the West Lafayette campus will provide hands-on activities and guest speakers. June 9-11: Rural health conference

The Indiana Rural Health Association's annual conference will be at the French Lick Springs Resort in French Lick, Ind. The association seeks to bring about changes in private and public policies to ensure that rural Hoosiers have access to quality health care in their own communities. The conference, "Rural Health Into the 21st Century," includes four concurrent sessions on public health, behavioral health, rural safety and health, and telehealth. The telehealth session will examine rural outreach, state and federal policy and Internet access. Also scheduled are several keynote addresses, a wine and dessert reception, an awards dinner, business meetings, and a Monte Carlo Night. The registration cost is $125 for non-IRHA members and $100 for members. All functions and meals are included in the price. June 21-23: Indiana state 4-H round-up

Round-up gives 4-H members from ages 12 to 14 the chance to learn about college life and career possibilities and the opportunity to develop role model and leadership skills. The cast from "Up With People" will perform to educate the youths about the importance of diversity and understanding other cultures. Multiple perspectives will be given on problem solving, leadership and relationship building. Other events will include 4-H exhibits, performances by the 4-H band and chorus, and recreation.
