Beering statement on higher education
funding in new budget
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Following the General Assembly's approval Thursday (4/29) of
a state budget for the 1999-2001 biennium, Purdue University President Steven C.
Beering issued the following statement:
"Our legislators have significantly improved the position of higher education in Indiana,
especially in the first year of the 1999-2001 budget. Their decision to make a portion
of funding for technology needs a recurring appropriation is an important first step in recognizing this ongoing new need. These recurring funds will help Purdue
and other state-assisted institutions address the pivotal issue of providing up-to-date
teaching tools to ensure that our graduates are in the forefront of today's professional environment. We will continue to work to address our funding needs in this arena.
"Hoosier lawmakers also have recognized the important impact and benefits that a college
education makes possible by significantly increasing student financial aid funding.
We also are pleased that full funding for repair and rehabilitation projects is provided and that the capital budget addresses the needs for a new building for academic
programs in the visual and performing arts at West Lafayette and for completion of
the technology building at the North Central campus.
"This budget does not fund all the needs of higher education, but I believe the legislators
listened carefully to our requests and treated us fairly. Purdue and the state are
partners in education, economic development and outreach. The Legislature, through its actions, has underscored the importance of that partnership."
