Purdue students recognized for honors, achievements

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eleven Purdue University students were recognized recently for their achievements.

-- Jill Brewer, Greencastle, Ind., won the Robert L. Page Outstanding Leadership Award presented by the Residence Hall Council. Brewer, a junior majoring in social studies education, has been president and vice president of Harrison Hall's student organization, Cavalier Club. She also is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an education honor society. The award consists of an engraved pen set and $100. The award is named for R.L. Page, who was director of residence halls for 20 years.

-- Dania Jaara of Celina, Ohio, is the seventh winner of the Janine DeHart Outstanding Freshman Award presented by the Residence Hall Council. Jaara, who is majoring in biology, is health awareness coordinator for Harrison Hall. She has been a hall tour guide and has assisted in numerous programs including the Penny Wars for United Way and the National Alcohol Awareness Week. The award consists of a plaque and $200. The award is named for Janine DeHart, who established the program to "give back to the residence hall system that was such an integral part of my college experience."

-- The School of Consumer and Family Sciences has named outstanding seniors in five departments. The students are chosen by faculty committees on the basis of academics, leadership and potential for future professional contributions. The awards are presented by the CFS Alumni Association. The winners are: Elizabeth A. Dimos, Crown Point, Ind., Department of Restaurant, Hotel, Institutional and Tourism Management; Sarah Beth Lambright, Decatur, Ind., Department of Foods and Nutrition; Karen K. Peckinpaugh, Martinez, Calif., Consumer and Family Sciences Education.; Katherine M. Prudhomme, Sacramento, Calif., Department of Child Development and Family Studies; and Courtney M. Rush, Waynetown, Ind., Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing.

-- For ceramics students in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts have been recognized for achievement. Suzanne Mauro, South Bend, Ind., had two ceramic works selected as finalists in the international Niche Student Awards at the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft. The 1999 exhibition drew 363 art-student entries from 59 art schools, colleges and universities around the world. Seventy-four entries were selected for exhibit. A senior in fine arts, Mauro was one of only five exhibitors to have both entries selected as finalists. The competition is sponsored by Niche Magazine of Baltimore, Md. Sheila Darlene Mitchell of West Lafayette, a ceramic graduate student, had her work selected for honorable mention in the exhibit Indiana Now! at the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art. Carolina Pedraza of West Lafayette, a senior in fine arts, had her ceramic work selected Best of Show in the 1999 Undergraduate Exhibition at Purdue. Jennifer Swan of Lafayette has had work accepted in two competitive exhibitions. One is Clayfest XI, which is being exhibited at the University of Indianapolis. That exhibition is open to current and former residents of Indiana. Swan also had work selected for exhibition in the University Show sponsored by the Northern Indiana Arts Alliance in Munster.
