April 25-29: Assistive Technology In The Heartland

Purdue's Breaking New Ground program, a national leader in helping farmers with disabilities find the technologies that help them return to work, is co-sponsoring this event in Indianapolis to share information with disabled people and resource providers. The conference will feature more than 25 sessions divided into four main subjects: school, work, home and play. The Westin Suites and Sheraton Indianapolis North Hotel will serve as the conference site. Registration is $225 and includes some meals and materials. April 27: Nutrition And Food Safety Workshop

Professionals working in quantity food production are invited to this workshop in Lebanon, Ind., which will address new and emerging nutrition and food safety issues specific to at-risk populations. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. followed by guest speakers and breakout sessions. Topics include new regulations for food service, hospital, cafeteria, and day care food service. The workshop will be at Lebanon Holiday Inn, on State Road 39 at I-65. Registration is $25 and includes lunch. April 28-29: Food Industry Summit

Purdue's Department of Food Science is sponsoring this summit titled "Food Industry Needs of the Next Millennium: Defining the Challenges." The summit will begin at 3 p.m. April 28 with tours of the new Food Science Building, followed by a reception and dinner at 6:30 p.m. April 29 events begin at 8:30 a.m. and include sessions about the food industry's role in the next millennium, defining the future, and a summary of what is ahead for the industry. Tours of the Food Science Building will be offered beginning at 3:30 p.m. Registration is $175 and includes building tours and dinner. Early registration is recommended. May 4-5: Keeping Kids Safe Workshop

Community leaders and individuals who work with youths on a regular basis can learn about preventing school and juvenile violence at this workshop sponsored by the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service's Department of 4-H Youth and the Indiana Criminal Justice System. In addition to discussing how to prevent gangs and violence, the workshop will feature specialized tracks on school safety and security, promoting diversity and preventing racism, violence in girls' lives, and prevention programs that work. The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. May 4 and conclude at 4 p.m. May 6. It will be held at the Abe Martin Lodge at Brown County State Park near Nashville, Ind. Registration is $65 for both days, or $40 for one day, and includes lunches, materials and breakfast. Pre-registration is required by April 25. June 8-11: Home And Family Conference

More than 700 homemakers and others are expected to attend the 1999 Home and Family Conference at Stewart Center and the Purdue Memorial Union, sponsored by Purdue Extension's Consumer and Family Sciences program. The keynote address will be delivered by Michelle Passoff, author of "LIGHTEN UP! Free Yourself from Clutter." Also included in the program are seminars on personal finances, child development, gourmet gardening and an introduction to the Internet. The conference is open to the public, and the fee is $35 for the whole conference or $25 per day. Housing is available for those who require it. Early registration is encouraged. June 9-11: 4-H Science Workshops

4-H members in grades 9-12 can participate in one of the seven science workshops sponsored by Purdue. Workshop topics will be food, aerospace, animal, plant, mechanical, computer science, or ambassador. Each workshop will provide hands-on activities and guest speakers. The deadline for registration is May 15. For more information about registration and specific details on each workshop, 4-H members should contact the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service office in their county. June 21-23: Indiana State 4-H Round-Up

4-H Round-up is designed to give 4-H members from 12 to 14 years old the chance to learn about college life and career possibilities and the opportunity to develop role model and leadership skills. The cast from "Up With People" will perform to educate the youths about the importance of diversity and understanding other cultures. Multiple perspectives will be given on problem solving, leadership and relationship building. Other events will include 4-H exhibits on display, performances by the 4-H band and chorus, and recreation. Registration is $75 and includes accommodations. The registration deadline is May 15. 4-H members are encouraged to contact the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service office in their county for more information.
