Campus activities

-- The HORIZONS student support program will celebrate its 20th anniversary at 1:30 p.m. Friday (4/23) in the main lobby of Schleman Hall. HORIZONS is a federally funded student retention program that provides services for first-generation college students, students with disabilities or students from low-income families. More than 850 students who have participated in HORIZONS have earned Purdue degrees.

Alumni honors

-- Five Purdue graduates were honored April 9 with 1999 Distinguished Alumni Awards from the university's School of Education. Indiana winners are Thomas Grabill, executive director, Educational Services Co., Indianapolis, who received the Career Achievement Award for his commitment to educational excellence and his contributions to education; Barbara Jo McCain, visual arts instructor, Camden Elementary School, Camden, who received the Community Achievement Award for contributions to her community, and for inspiring that spirit in others; Patricia O'Brien, executive director, Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Central Indiana, Kokomo, who received the Friend of Education Award for contributions to education in and out of the classroom; and William J. Shidler, fifth-grade teacher, Klondike Elementary School, West Lafayette, who received the Young Educator Award for innovation in curriculum design and for school and community involvement. The fifth honoree is Ann Robinson, professor of educational psychology, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, who received the Award of Distinction.

-- Seven Purdue graduates were honored April 9 with 1999 Distinguished Alumni Awards from Purdue's School of Pharmacy. The awards are given annually to honor graduates for their achievements in professional and scientific endeavors. This year's award winners are Bruce R. Canaday, clinical professor, University of North Carolina Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine, Wilmington, N.C.; Albert E. Jarvis, vice president, A&M Consulting, Lakeland, Fla.; Glenn R. Knotts, executive director, Hermann Eye Fund, Houston, Texas; Robert A. Lipper, vice president of biopharmaceutics research and development, Bristol Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Pennington, N.J.; Kathryn MacFarlane, director of marketing for the Atherosclerosis Disease Team, Parke-Davis, Madison, N.J.; Ceferino Sanchez, national secretary, Office of Science and Technology, Republic of Panama; and Robert G. Wolfangel, director of regulatory affairs for Mallinckrodt Medical Inc., St. Louis, Mo.
