Eight Purdue seniors earn $2,300 leadership awards
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eight Purdue University students received Charles O. McGaughey
(mick GOY) Leadership Awards today (Friday, 4/16) during the University Honors Convocation.
Each student earned an unrestricted cash award of $2,300. The recipients, all seniors,
are Stephanie Albertson, Lafayette,
Stacy Demerly, Wolcott,
Griffin Dunham, Lafayette,
Christopher E. Dunn, Mishawaka,
Carrie Fischer, St. Louis,
David Hefty, Auburn,
Michelle King, Sparta, Ill.,
and Umang Sharma, Carmel.
McGaughey, a 1939 Purdue graduate from Indianapolis, established the award to honor
undergraduates who show leadership abilities and an appreciation of basic American
values through service to the community and the university. McGaughey, who co-founded
the Indiana-based MCL Cafeteria chain, died in 1992. The first awards were presented
in 1991.
Recipients must have completed at least two years of study at Purdue while maintaining
a B average and have an appreciation of the values of liberty, the democratic form
of government, and the importance of respect for others and for the diversity of
the United States.
Here are the details about the winners:
Albertson is majoring in psychology and law and society. She has been a notetaker
for students with disabilities and has been a volunteer for the Adult Student Association
of Purdue, Cub Scout Pack 202 and the American Red Cross. She is a member of Golden Key, Alpha Sigma Lambda, Alpha Kappa Delta and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies. She
plans to enter the doctoral program in social psychology at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Demerly is majoring in food industry marketing and management. She is captain of
the School of Agriculture's agri-marketing team and has been president of the Food
Industry Marketing and Management Club. She has been a teaching assistant and an
Agriculture Ambassador. She helped the Office of Admissions with several programs for prospective
students and has been involved in the Purdue Foundation Student Board.
Dunham is majoring in history. He has been active in student government, serving
as student body vice president. He is a co-founder of Greeks Against Rape and is
chairman of Purdue's Campus Safety Task Force. He is a member of Sigma Chi social
fraternity, Skull and Crescent leadership honorary and Semper Fi society. After graduation,
he will attend the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School and law school.
Dunn is majoring in economics and engineering. He is president of the Purdue chapter
of Habitat for Humanity and past president of the Purdue Economics Club. He is a
member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, Golden Key and Tau Beta Pi engineering honorary.
In addition to Habitat for Humanity, he has worked with Lafayette Head Start and Big
Brothers/Big Sisters.
Fischer is majoring in English and communications. She has been executive director
of public relations for Purdue Student Government and is a past president of the
Public Relations Student Society of America. She also has been involved with the
Purdue Student Union Board, President's Roundtable and the Purdue Student Host Organization.
She has been a volunteer for St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Lafayette Urban Ministry
Hefty is majoring in agricultural economics and minoring in international studies.
He was named the G.A. Ross outstanding senior male during University Honors Convocation.
He has been active in FarmHouse social fraternity, serving as vice president, pledge educator, rush co-chairman and pledge class president. He also has served as Agriculture
Council president, Agriculture Economics Club historian and an Agriculture Ambassador.
King is majoring in accounting. She has been secretary and assistant treasurer at
Glenwood Cooperative House and was an assistant representative to the Purdue Cooperative
Housing Association. She has served as state president and parliamentarian of the
Future Business Leaders of America and serves on the board of Tilden Holiness Camp.
She is president of Management Ambassadors and has been secretary of Delta Sigma
Pi professional business fraternity.
Sharma is majoring in biology. She has been gender issues director for Purdue Student
Government and been co-chairwoman of the local chapter of Amnesty International.
As a peer educator, she has helped conduct seminars for the Office of the Dean of
Students. She has been a member of Purdue Partners in Prevention and has been a volunteer
for the Lafayette Crisis Center, Lafayette Urban Ministry, Lafayette Area Peace Coalition
and St. Vincent's Hospital. She will attend medical school in the fall.
