Faculty cited at honors convocation
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Outstanding teaching at Purdue during the 1998-99 academic
year was recognized Friday (4/16) at the University Honors Convocation.
The annual awards ceremony in Elliott Hall of Music honors outstanding faculty members
universitywide and in each of the undergraduate schools. Additionally, Dean's List
or Semester Honors students from the 1998 spring and fall semesters were recognized,
as were winners of year-end student and staff awards.
Five faculty members received Purdue University Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching
Awards in Memory of Charles B. Murphy. Each $3,000 award -- the university's highest
undergraduate teaching honor -- is given for exemplary teaching performance in all
phases of undergraduate instruction on Purdue's West Lafayette campus.
The 1999 winners are:
Sandra K. Abell, professor of curriculum and instruction.
Johnny E. Brown, professor of mathematics.
James D. Jones, associate professor of mechanical engineering.
G. Marc Loudon, the Gustav E. Cwalina Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry.
William J. Palmer, professor of English.
Academic school teaching awards and the recipients are:
School of Agriculture Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award -- Robert W. Sovinski,
associate professor of landscape architecture.
Mary L. Matthews Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in the School of Consumer
and Family Sciences -- Joseph M. La Lopa, assistant professor of restaurant, hotel,
institutional and tourism management.
School of Education Outstanding Teacher Award -- Margaret J. Finders, associate professor
of curriculum and instruction.
A.A. Potter Best of Engineering Teachers Award -- Daniel S. Elliott, professor of
electrical engineering.
School of Liberal Arts Educational Excellence Award -- James E. Porter, professor
of English.
School of Management Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award -- Susan G. Watts, assistant
professor of management.
School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences Professor Henry W. Heine Award for Excellence
in Teaching -- Stanley M. Shaw, head, Division of Nuclear Pharmacy in Medical Pharmacy.
Excellence in Teaching Award in the School of Nursing -- Kimberlee A. Gretebeck, graduate
instructor.
School of Science Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award -- James E. McClure, professor
of mathematics.
School of Technology James G. Dwyer Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching
-- Bruce P. Mignano, assistant professor of industrial technology.
School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award -- Kevin M. Hannon,
assistant professor of veterinary anatomy.
Other faculty award recipients are:
Leah H. Jamieson, professor of electrical engineering, who won the Helen B. Schleman
Gold Medallion Award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize and medal. The Schleman
Award is for significant contributions to women students at the university.
Ray A. Bressan, professor of horticulture and landscape architecture, who was named
the 1999 winner of the $3,000 Herbert Newby McCoy Award for contributions to the
field of science for his research on disease resistance in plants.
Ray E. Eberts, associate professor of industrial engineering, who won the Class of
1922 Helping Students Learn Award for his work on a course that makes full use of
the Internet for on-line lectures, homework and multimedia tools. He received a $3,750
cash prize, and his department will receive a $1,250 academic expense account for his
use. At the Purdue Alumni Association's Founders Day Banquet on Saturday, April 24,
he will receive the Helping Students Learn Award crystal trophy.
Michael A. Morrison, associate professor of history, who was recognized as the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching 1998 Indiana Professor of the Year, an
award originally bestowed last fall.
