Keeping Kids Safe workshop to be held May 4-5WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Community leaders and individuals who work with youths on a regular basis can learn about preventing school and juvenile violence at a "Keeping Kids Safe" workshop May 4-5.The workshop will be at Brown County State Park in Nashville, Ind., and is sponsored by Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service's Department of 4-H Youth and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. "This is the second year we have had this type of workshop, and this year's program is due to requests from clientele," said Pam Robbins, coordinator of Purdue's Community Systemwide Response, a 4-H group that works with communities on local youth issues. "That tells me that community leaders feel there is a need." In addition to discussing how to prevent gangs and juvenile violence, the workshop will feature specialized track workshops on school safety and security, promoting diversity and preventing racism, responding to violence in girls' lives, and prevention programs that work. Robbins said participants also will learn what problems face Indiana youths today. She said one of the highlights of the workshop will be Tuesday's presentations by Steve Nawojczyk, a former coroner from Little Rock, Ark., who has been researching gangs and juvenile violence since 1987. Nawojczyk has been an adviser to the Arkansas Attorney General's Youth Gang Task Force since 1993 and is a consultant to schools, businesses and communities. Robbins said she encourages participants to attend in teams because it increases the chances for successful anti-violence programming at the local level. Past participants included school principals, teachers, youth probation officers, juvenile judges, police officers, Extension 4-H educators and concerned citizens. The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. May 4 and conclude at 4 p.m. May 6. It will be at the Abe Martin Lodge at the Brown County State Park. The park entrance is on State Road 46, approximately 20 miles west of Columbus and 18 miles east of Bloomington. Registration is $65 for both days or $40 for one day. The cost covers materials, lunches on both days, a continental breakfast on the second day and breaks. Pre-registration is required by April 25. For registration information, contact Robbins at (812) 967-3738 or by e-mail at probbins@wcrtc.net. An on-line registration form is available at the Indiana 4-H Web site. The Abe Martin Lodge is holding a block of rooms for the workshop, with a room rate of $75.90 for a double. Contact the lodge at (812) 988-4418 to make reservations. The block is in the name of "Purdue University CSR, Group No. 9523." The deadline for room reservations in the held block is April 15. CONTACT: Robbins, (812) 967-3738; probbins@wcrtc.net
