Purdue to honor construction companies on Sunday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- During its 20 years of existence, Purdue University's Division of Construction Engineering and Management has worked with construction companies across the United States to provide internships for students.

During the department's anniversary celebration Sunday (4/11), 17 firms that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the program will be placed on a permanent honor roll.

The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Room 1252 of the Civil Engineering Building. Afterward, a reception will be held in the East and West Faculty Lounges of the Purdue Memorial Union. There also will be an open house from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Civil Engineering Building. The public is invited to all three events.

Robert Tener, assistant professor of construction engineering and management, said the 17 firms have accepted Purdue students as interns in at least three successive years. Some companies have spent as much as $20,000 over three years to make an internship available.

"The internships are a structured learning experience, not just a summer job," Tener said. "Companies have spent thousands of dollars to help prepare our students for successful careers. Our department thought it was important to recognize the incredible contribution they have made."

Indiana companies being recognized are BMW Constructors of Indianapolis, Bechtel Construction of Goshen, Bowen Engineering of Indianapolis, Calumet Construction of Hammond, Fluor Daniel of Indianapolis, Geupel DeMars Hagerman of Fort Wayne, Huber Hunt & Nichols of Indianapolis and Milestone Contractors of Indianapolis.
