Students plan for safe, sober Grand Prix weekend

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- More than 200 student leaders will gather in Mackey Arena on April 13 to plan safe and sober activities during the Purdue Grand Prix.

The Office of the Dean of Students is sponsoring the Grand Prix Community Standards Panel from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is designed to inform and educate students on behavior expectations during Grand Prix, said Pablo Malavenda, associate dean of students. "Students are excited about the end of the semester, and they need to celebrate," Malavenda said. "The panel is about helping groups organize safe and sober activities as part of that celebration."

Representatives of most Purdue fraternities, sororities and cooperative houses will attend, Malavenda said, as well as campus, local, state and excise law enforcement officers.

Numerous activities, dubbed the Grand Alternative, already have been planned for the week of the Purdue Grand Prix go-kart race, which will be run Saturday, April 24.

Habitat for Humanity will sponsor a Run for Shelter at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, April 18, at the Recreational Sports Center. The group will conduct a Building Under the Lights event at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, April 20 and 22. Interested volunteers should contact Habitat for Humanity at habitat@expert.cc.purdue.edu or Chris Dunn at (765) 743-1090.

A Jesus Party, a social event with music and games, is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. April 24. The organization will sponsor a concert by Daniel's Window at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 25. All three events will be at the foundation building at 435 W. State St., West Lafayette.

The Recreational Sports Center will open for additional hours during the week: 8 p.m. to midnight Thursday, April 22, and 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24.

Purdue Student Government is sponsoring a free concert on Slayter Hill at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 25.

The weekend's highlighted event is the Purdue Grand Prix, a 50-mile, 160-lap kart race conducted on a special track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. Gates open at 10 a.m., sprint races to fill the final six spots on the starting grid will start about 11:30 a.m., and the featured race will begin about 2:30 p.m.

All the Grand Alternative events are sponsored by Purdue Student Government, Purdue Cooperative Housing Association, Panhellenic Association, Interfraternity Council, Habitat for Humanity, Wesley Foundation, Grand Prix Foundation, Division of Recreational Sports, Health Promotion Programs and Coca-Cola.
