JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and some Purdue events during the next two weeks.

Rube duffers will tee up in national contest

The 11th annual National Rube Goldberg Machine Contest will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, in Elliott Hall of Music at Purdue University. Teams of students from Purdue, Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y.; Oakland University, Rochester, Mich.; the University of Texas at Austin; and the University of Toledo in Ohio will compete with machines that use at least 20 steps to tee up a golf ball. Each machine must run, be reset and run again in nine minutes. Points are deducted if students have to assist the machine once it's started. The teams also will be judged on the creative use of materials and use of related themes. In addition to cash prizes for the top three teams, a "People's Choice" award will be given to the team whose machine gets the most votes from audience members. Journalists will not be allowed on the stage with the machines during the competition, but they are welcome on stage before and after the contest. Purdue will provide video and photo pool coverage and direct audio and video feeds. An ISDN line is available for radio interviews. Video b-roll, photos and a news release will be available the afternoon of the event. There will be a 15-minute satellite feed of highlights from the contest, including an interview with a member of the winning team, a running of the winning machine, awards presentation, audience shots, etc. The feed will begin at 4:30 p.m. EDT (3:30 p.m. EST [Indianapolis time]).
