Spacious new "dining commons'
to replace current food services
Work is expected to start in May 2000 on the renovation and consolidation of
food services in the residence halls.
When work is completed in five or so years, five enlarged and renovated
dining commons will replace the existing 11 food-service facilities. Five
cash operations - where residents can use "dining dollars" or cash for food
and products - will be located in Hillenbrand, Harrison, Meredith, Owen and
Cary. Those will replace seven current grills and mini-marts.
"We are moving to a neighborhood concept in which a number of dining options
will be near all residents," says Marvis Boscher, director of university
residences.
Work will proceed in five phases, although the order of the work has not
been decided.
When work begins on the first phase, McCutcheon Hall dining facilities will
close permanently to manage costs.
Each phase is expected to take about 18 months. At the end of that period, a
nearby dining operation not being renovated will be closed. Use of that
vacant space has not been decided.
Specifics remain to be decided by Housing and Food Services staff, Purdue
planners, and architects. But the enlarged dining commons likely will be
located in these areas:
* Tarkington Hall or Wiley Hall.
* Windsor Halls.
* Shreve Hall or Earhart Hall.
* Cary Quadrangle.
* Hillenbrand Hall.
Although fewer employees will be needed to prepare and serve food after the
project is complete, no job cuts are expected. Normal attrition will be
sufficient, Boscher says.
