BCC singers to present Easter and Motown musicWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- "Step by Step, We're Moving Forward" is the theme of this year's Black Voices of Inspiration spring concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at Purdue University. The event -- held on a Sunday in past years -- is the second of the Spring Performing Arts Ensembles Series presented by the Purdue Black Cultural Arts Center. Tickets cost $5 for students, $7 for others, and can be purchased at the Loeb Box Office or by calling (765) 494-3939. The show will be at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center. "Our theme hopes to express the choir's new attitude to continue reaching for musical excellence as they touch more people with their inspiring message," said artist-in-residence Marshall White, who directs the group. The first half of the concert will be devoted to the Easter holiday, with spirituals, pop gospel, jazz and more. The second half will feature a special tribute to the Motown sound. "I am always inspired by the many artists who recorded on the Motown label," White said. "This will be an unforgettable concert as BVOI prepares itself for an international tour." A combined group of 105 student singers from the Black Voices of Inspiration and Purdue Musical Organizations is preparing for a "Voices of America" tour to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji from May 18 through June 5. The songs selected for the tour will feature the national anthems and folk songs of the countries visited, plus a broad range of music that is representative of America's heritage. The Black Voices of Inspiration, one of four performing arts ensembles at the BCC, was founded in 1975 and is committed to performing music by African-American composers.
