U.S. News ranks engineering grad programs in top 10WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The graduate programs in engineering at Purdue University ranked ninth in the country in a U.S. News and World Report survey released today (Friday, 3/19).The list of "America's Best Graduate Schools" appears in the March 22 issue of the magazine, available on newsstands Monday (3/22). The rankings and related articles also are available on the U.S. News and World Report Web site. In addition to the No. 9 overall ranking, Purdue's Schools of Engineering ranked second in industrial/manufacturing engineering, fifth in civil engineering, sixth in mechanical engineering, sixth in aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering, eighth in electrical engineering, and ninth in nuclear engineering. "We are once again pleased to be ranked among the top graduate programs in the country," said Richard J. Schwartz, dean of the Schools of Engineering. "With six of the individual schools ranked among the top 10, and with Purdue engineering degrees known throughout the nation and the world, we continue to attract the best students to our programs. When you also consider that corporate recruiters rank the Schools of Engineering as fourth in the nation for recruiting purposes, it makes a Purdue engineering degree even more of a value." The rankings were based in part on surveys of engineering school deans, corporate recruiters and practicing engineers. Other factors affecting the survey results include students' scores on the Graduate Record Exam, research activity, and the ratio of full-time grad students to full-time faculty. The graduate engineering program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was ranked first overall for the 11th year, followed by Stanford University and the University of Michigan. Purdue and Michigan were the only Big Ten schools ranked among the top 10. Purdue has been awarding engineering degrees since 1878. The university's Schools of Engineering are among the largest in the United States, with a faculty of about 300, graduate enrollment of about 1,600 students, and undergraduate enrollment of almost 6,000.
