Irish poet to speak at Literary Awards banquetNOTE TO JOURNALISTS: A photograph of Eavan Boland is available from the English Department at (765) 494-3740. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Irish Poet Eavan Boland will speak at the Purdue University Literary Awards Banquet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 15, in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union. Described as one of Ireland's finest contemporary writers, Boland has published 10 books of poetry including "In a Time of Violence," "An Origin Like Water," and "The Lost Land." She has won the Lanham Foundation Award in Poetry and the American Ireland Fund Literary Award, and she also holds a professorship at Stanford University. Tickets for the banquet go on sale Monday, March 29, in Room 324 of Heavilon Hall. Prices are $17 for faculty, staff and the public and $12 for students. Ticket sales will end at noon Monday, April 12. At the banquet, prizes will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students in more than 50 categories. A pre-banquet reception to honor high school winners of the Literary Awards contest will begin at 6 p.m. in the English Lounge, Room 320 Heavilon Hall. The reception is free. An informal question-and-answer session featuring Boland will be held Friday, April 16, from 11 a.m. to noon in Room 320 Heavilon Hall. The session is free and open to the public. Boland also will give a free public reading Friday, April 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Room 218 of Stewart Center.
