Video available with Purdue highlights of 1998WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 44th edition of the Purdue Newsreel is available for viewing from the Instructional Media Center in the Purdue University Undergraduate Library or for purchase from the Purdue Alumni Association.The 20-minute program, which highlights Purdue events from 1998, was produced by the Office of University Relations. The movie, "1998 Purdue Newsreel: Strength in Numbers," is sponsored by the Alumni Association, the Alumni Foundation and the Office of the President. It is shown to Purdue alumni clubs around the world. The 1998 Newsreel is narrated by 1958 Purdue graduate John Hultman, who is a retired news anchor from WBBM Newsradio in Chicago. The program was produced and directed by Ray Cubberley, assistant director of university relations for broadcast services. A copy of the newsreel on VHS videotape can be purchased for $19.95 plus $3 for shipping and handling from the Purdue Alumni Association, Room 161, Purdue Memorial Union, West Lafayette, Ind. 47906-6212, telephone (765) 494-5175. Highlights in the 1998 newsreel include: record student enrollment; Liberal Arts Dean's Scholar Program; residence hall floor for female science students; the Student Managed Investment Fund; a literacy education class held at a local elementary school; the BioScope Initiative; distance learning on the Internet; Rube Goldberg Machine Contest; Engineering Olympics; Grand Prix Race; Bug Bowl; anniversaries for Purdue Pete and the Boilermaker Special; new featured twirlers in the marching band; Ballroom Dancing Club doing the swing; Professor of the Year Michael Morrison; distinguished professorships; research involving the human cold virus; research involving artificial knees; the Center for Families; the arrival of pilot and aviation historian Linda Finch to honor Amelia Earhart; Purdue's involvement with the release of river otters; and new senior administrators.
