Mock trial team to compete in national contestWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A mock trial team from Purdue University is among 64 teams that will compete for the national championship in Des Moines, Iowa, in April.The Purdue team placed second in a regional contest involving 18 teams from 11 universities. Another team from Purdue placed fifth. Teams compete by presenting a full trial based on a hypothetical court case. Students serve as both attorneys and witnesses. Going to the national contest is the team consisting of captain John Rearick, a sophomore from South Bend, Ind. Tracy Leroy, a senior from Springfield, Va.; Stephanie Green, a senior from Jacksonville, Fla.; Jenny DeCamp, a senior from Kingsford Heights, Ind.; Jeremy Grogg, a senior from Auburn, Ind.; Doug Seamark, a senior from West Lafayette; Cheryl Maman a senior from Hammond, Ind.; and Jared Cook, a senior from Fairview Park, Ohio. The other Purdue team consisted of captain Stephanie Boster, a senior from Casper, Wyo.; Juliann Rogers, a junior from Lowell, Ind.; Tonya Lengar, a junior from Indianapolis; Vic Ballard, a junior from Indianapolis; Allen Hufford, a senior from Danville, Ind.; and James Krieger, a junior from Danville, Calif. Additionally, Purdue students won five individual awards. No other school at the regional had more than three such awards. Leroy and Rogers won awards as best attorneys; Ballard, DeCamp and Hufford won best witness awards, and Ballard was voted the best overall witness in the competition.
