Appointments and promotions

-- Betsy Smithka has accepted an appointment as an assistant dean of students. Her duties will include supervising the office manager for the Office of the Dean of Students, counseling students, and administering the G.A. Ross and Flora Roberts outstanding senior awards. She began working in the Office of the Dean of Students in February 1995 as a program specialist/counselor in Adaptive Programs.

Campus activities

-- Purdue Panhellenic Association earned the 1998 Sutherland Award for outstanding programming during the annual Mid-American Greek Council Association conference last month. This is the second year Purdue Panhellenic has won the award. In addition to the Sutherland Award, Purdue Panhellenic received superior programming awards in the areas of academic achievement, public relations, community service, council management, membership recruitment, and self-governance and judicial affairs.

-- Jeffrey A. Rosko of Valparaiso, a junior in the School of Mechanical Engineering who died recently, will be recognized during the monthly Golden Taps ceremony at 10 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at Spitzer Court, Cary Quadrangle. The ceremony is sponsored and coordinated by Pendragon, the Cary Quad student leadership honorary. The Golden Taps ceremony is conducted monthly when a member of the student body has died the month before.

Faculty and staff honors

-- Marilyn Haring, dean of the School of Education, received the Gender Equity Architect award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) on Feb. 26. The award, sponsored by AACTE's Committee on Women's Issues, was given in recognition of Haring's contributions to feminist and leadership inquiry and for mentoring young scholars.
