WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Girls in grades six through nine are invited to explore career opportunities in science during a one-day conference Saturday, April 17, at Purdue University.

"Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics" is designed to provide hands-on information about math- and science-related careers.

The cost for the conference is $15, which includes conference materials, lunch and a T-shirt. Registration is limited to the first 350 participants, and the deadline is March 31.

Students may choose among 14 workshops on careers such as dentistry, veterinary science and zoology, computer programming, environmental science, food and nutrition, technology, pharmacy, medicine, biology, and sports and fitness. Workshops for parents and educators also are available.

The conference is part of a national effort to motivate young women to take advanced math and science courses in junior high and high school, said Kay Conner, academic adviser in Purdue's Department of Chemistry.

The event is sponsored by Purdue's Department of Chemistry and School of Science, the American Chemical Society, National Starch and Chemical Co., the Math and Science Network, and Amoco.
