Appointments and promotions

-- E. Dan Hirleman, a faculty member and administrator at Arizona State University and a Purdue engineering alumnus, has been named head of Purdue's School of Mechanical Engineering effective March 29. He succeeds Frank Incropera, who left Purdue to become dean of engineering at the University of Notre Dame.

Hirleman, who joined the Arizona State faculty in 1977, is associate dean for research there and has joint appointments as a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and professor of electrical engineering. His research has focused on optical measurement techniques, including surface characterization and sensors for semiconductor manufacturing, particle and flow diagnostics, and design for inspectability. He has published more than 100 journal articles and has four patents. Hirleman received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue in 1972, 1974 and 1977, respectively.

Faculty and staff honors

-- Doraiswami Ramkrishna, the Harry Creighton Peffer Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at Purdue, has been awarded the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' R.H. Wilhelm Award in Chemical Reaction Engineering for outstanding contributions to the field. This is the second award that Ramkrishna has received from the organization. His areas of expertise include applied mathematics, chemical reaction engineering and biochemical engineering.

Alumni honors

-- The School of Industrial Engineering honored seven graduates, including Lafayette native James E. Morehouse, with Outstanding Industrial Engineers Awards on Feb. 26 during National Engineers Week. Honorees were Bradford C. Anker, vice president, Systems Manufacturing for the Acuson Corp., Palo Alto, Calif.; Dennis Engi, chief scientist for the Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M.; Luis Machuca, former executive vice president, Packard Bell NEC Inc., Hillsboro, Ore.; D. Lynn Mercer, product realization vice president, Lucent Technologies, Mount Olive, N.J.; Morehouse, vice president and senior account officer for A.T. Kearney Inc., Chicago; Curtis D. Neel, senior vice president, Eckerd Corp., Belleair, Fla.; and Maj. Gen. Robert D. Shadley, deputy chief of staff, logistics and readiness, U.S. Army, Atlanta, Ga. This is the third year for the award, which is given by the school to recognize alumni who have distinguished themselves through technical and leadership accomplishments in industrial engineering and related areas.

Campus activities

-- Charlotte Westerhaus, director of the Affirmative Action Office, will speak at a Brown Bag Series lecture at noon Thursday, March 4, in Stone Hall Cellar (Room B2). The topic will be "What's Affirmative Action Got to Do With It?" The talk is sponsored by African American Studies.
