Purdue presents science teaching institute

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Indiana high school science, math and language arts teachers interested in incorporating local environmental research into their classroom projects can learn how at a Purdue University institute this summer.

Up to 20 teachers will be accepted for the Environmental Science Institute for Indiana Teachers June 14-25 on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The institute is being underwritten by a grant from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, and it will be conducted by Purdue faculty and staff in the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

The institute will focus on environmental concepts, research and issues surrounding the management of wetlands and watersheds. It will help the teachers develop strategies for selecting and adopting local environmental science content to meet the needs and interests of their students.

Participants will return to Purdue for two days in the fall and two more in the winter for review and follow-up, and they will create a poster presentation for the 2000 Hoosier Association for Science Teachers Inc. (HASTI) conference.

The state grant will cover lodging and meals during the two-week institute and during academic year workshops, instructional and assessment materials, and a $60 per day stipend for each teacher.

The teachers' schools are expected to provide release time for participants, implementation support of $200 per teacher, access to computer technology and telecommunications, and travel expenses for the presentation at the HASTI conference. Teams of teachers from the same school or corporation are encouraged to apply together.
