Health center to raise awareness of eating disordersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue Student Health Center will be "Celebrating EveryBODY" during National Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention Week Feb. 21-27.The featured event will be a slide presentation, "Aesthetics of Beauty: The Actual vs. the Abstract" at 7 p.m. Monday (2/22), in Elliott Hall of Music. The show, presented by Graeme Reid of the Greater Lafayette Museum of Art, will explore the historical perspective of societal beauty standards throughout time. A half hour before Reid's talk, the Black Cultural Center's Jahari Dance Troupe will present a program designed to increase appreciation for the diversity of body sizes and shapes and skin colors. Other activities during the week include a body acceptance walk from the Stewart Center mural to the Memorial Mall fountain at 3:30 p.m. Thursday (2/25), and Fearless Friday, a day to abstain from dieting, bad body thoughts and negative self-talk. The health center and Students for Healthy (Body) Acceptance and Positive Esteem have prepared a traveling display that reviews the standards of beauty through the centuries.
