Quartet to perform with guitarist Manuel Barrueco

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Colorado Quartet, joined by classical guitarist Manuel Barrueco, will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center on the campus of Purdue University.

The Colorado Quartet has been at the forefront of the international music scene since winning both the Banff String Quartet Competition and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1983. Since then, the quartet has performed extensively, visiting more than 20 countries around the globe. Known as inspiring, dedicated teachers, the members of the quartet -- Francesca Martin Silos, viola; Diane Chaplin, cello; Deborah Redding, violin; and Julie Rosenfeld, violin -- founded the Soundfest Chamber Music Festival and Quartet Institute in Falmouth, Mass., in 1991. During the 1998-99 season, the quartet has been in residence at the Oberlin Conservatory.

USA Today sums up the appeal of this world-class ensemble: "String quartet lovers will be baffled that this group isn't better known. It's not just their fine sense of ensemble, each member also projects an absorbing individuality."

The women of Colorado Quartet are joined by Cuban-born classical guitarist Manuel Barrueco. The Los Angeles Times calls him "a major artist with remarkable musicianship and a world of technique ... simply and consistently awesome."

The concert program will begin with the Colorado Quartet on Haydn's Lark Quartet, followed by Barrueco in a solo guitar piece, Variations on a Theme by Mozart by Fernando Sor. They will join forces on Boccherini's Quintet in D major for Guitar and Strings. The program will end with the quartet performing Brahms' Quartet in A minor.

Tickets to the performance are $16 for the public and $10 for Purdue students at campus box offices. Charge by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

This concert, part of the Loeb Music Collection presented by Purdue Convocations, is made possible in part by the support of the Friends of Convocations, the self-supporting department's donor organization.
