Trustees approve ticket prices; spouse fee discounts

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, 2/12) set athletic ticket prices and reduced credit-hour fees for employee spouses during its meeting at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Prices of football and basketball tickets for students will remain the same. For the general public, single-game tickets will increase $1 for men's basketball and $4 for football. A new, less expensive season football ticket will be available for people who choose seats in the south end zone of Ross-Ade Stadium.

"Currently Purdue season football ticket prices are the lowest in the Big Ten," James S. Almond, vice president for business services and assistant treasurer, said. "The 1998 price of the season ticket ranged from $120 at Purdue to $210 at Ohio State University. In recent years single-game tickets have increased modestly and season ticket prices have increased by only $2 a game since 1991-92. That's about 1.4 percent each year. After the increase, the football prices still are expected to be the in the middle of the Big Ten."

The new prices are expected to raise $700,000 in additional revenue. While a portion will be used to offset inflation in the athletic department's operating budget, the rest is earmarked for renovating Ross-Ade Stadium, Almond said.

"Our athletic director, Morgan Burke, is developing a master plan for both the physical and financial needs of Ross-Ade Stadium for the 21st century. The next major tasks include $3.5 million for concrete restoration work and continued upgrades of restrooms.

"Because our athletic department is self-supporting, the revenue generated from our tickets is a primary means for making improvements to these facilities."

To be eligible, staff must work at least half time and have been employed by Purdue at least two years.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved the installation of a new electrical feeder system for the Electrical Engineering Building. Electrical Engineering and the Mechanical Engineering Building share a feeder that is at capacity. The project estimate is $1.1 million.

  • Approved hiring Cole Associates of South Bend as architects for completion of the Technology Building at Purdue North Central. The trustees also hired Scholer Corp. of Lafayette as architects for renovations of Cary Quadrangle and several University Residences food service operations.

  • Approved a bachelor's degree program in computer engineering at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and a bachelor's degree program in hospitality management at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Both would be offered this fall if approved by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.

The IPFW program will be offered in cooperation with Ivy Tech's Fort Wayne campus. Graduates of the IPFW Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management associate degree program, as well as Ivy Tech associate degree graduates, will be eligible.
