Theatre teams with PMO to present 'Into the Woods'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue Theatre and Purdue Musical Organizations join forces to present "Into the Woods" Feb. 19-27.

The Tony Award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine uses characters and story lines from traditional fairy tales, along with a few new characters, on a journey to "happily ever after" and beyond. It looks at growing up, our responsibility to the world we inhabit, the lengths we will go to make dreams come true, and the values we pass on to our children.

The show will be presented on the Loeb Playhouse stage in Stewart Center at 8 p.m. Feb. 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $6 for children. A sneak preview is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. Sneak preview tickets are $5.50. Tickets are available at the Loeb Box Office or by calling (765) 494-3933. For information on group discounts, call (765) 494-3084.

Three matinee performances for upper elementary, junior high and high school students will be presented at 11 a.m. Feb. 23-25. For more information, teachers should call (765) 494-3084.

Kristine Holtvedt, associate professor of theater, directs the production, and Jonathan Swoboda, PMO assistant director, is musical director. The choreographer is Eric Sydnor, a candidate for a master of fine arts degree.

"Into the Woods" showcases the talents of graduate and undergraduate students representing the Theatre Division and PMO. Two masters of fine arts candidates from the Professional Actor Training Program will appear in their thesis roles. For Katherine Burke (Baker's Wife) and Julie Willis (Witch), these roles represent the culmination of their study at Purdue.

The design team also features two graduate students who will complete their graduate study with work on this production -- costume designer Shauna Colclasure-Meador and lighting designer Erin Grant. Theatre Division Chairman Russ Jones is the scenic designer.
