Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant names two Knauss FellowsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Two Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant-sponsored candidates have been selected as Dean John A. Knauss Policy Fellows for 1999.Holly R. Koehler and Edmund R. Buckner were named Knauss Fellows by the National Sea Grant College Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As fellows, they will work for a year in Washington, D.C., on national marine policy issues. Buckner, a Ph.D. candidate in natural resource policy at Purdue University, has been assigned to the office of U.S. Rep. Ron Kind of Wisconsin and will serve as the liaison and primary point of contact for the Upper Mississippi River Congressional Task Force. Buckner is an Arkansas native and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Koehler, a Michigan native, has been assigned to the Office of Marine Conservation, Bureau of Oceans and International Environment and Scientific Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, where she will work on global issues related to international marine management. She earned an undergraduate degree at Kenyon College and a master's degree at Indiana University. Sea Grant Director Phillip Pope said: "Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant is pleased to support these two outstanding candidates. Both bring exemplary records and intense interests in natural resource policy issues." Two other Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant-sponsored candidates have previously been selected as Knauss Fellows. John Epifano was selected in 1990, and Jeff Stein in 1998. The Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program is one of 29 National Sea Grant College Programs. Created by Congress in 1966, Sea Grant combines university, government, business and industry expertise to address coastal and Great Lakes needs. Funding is provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, Purdue University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
