Appointments and promotions

-- Michael D. Sanders is the new director of management undergraduate programs in Purdue's School of Management. He succeeds Barbara G. Doster, who retires Monday (2/8). Sanders, who has undergraduate and graduate degrees from Purdue in industrial education, previously was head academic adviser in the electrical engineering technology department in the School of Technology. He is a member of the National Academic Advising Association and the Purdue Academic Advising Association, which selected him as the 1993 outstanding academic adviser. Doster has been with the School of Management for 22 years. Among her professional awards are the Helen B. Schleman Award in 1988 and the outstanding adviser award in 1998 from the National Academic Advising Association. In her honor, management students have established the Barbara G. Doster Leadership Forum, a three-day biennial leadership and professional development seminar for Krannert students. The first forum was Feb. 5-7 in Indianapolis.

Campus activities

-- The Council on the Status of Women is accepting nominations for the 1999 Violet Haas Award, which recognizes a Purdue individual, program or department that has made a noteworthy effort on behalf of women through hiring, promotion, education, salary or enhanced professional climate. Nomination letters and support statements not exceeding three pages should be sent by Feb. 19 to: Violet Haas Selection Committee, c/o Judy Ware, English Department, Heavilon Hall. Last year's winner was Assistant Dean of Students Peggy Sullivan, who is director of the Span Plan program.

-- Syndicated advice columnist Harlan Cohen will give a free presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday (2/9) in Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Circle, a freestyle percussionist, will perform at 6:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Health Promotion Programs in conjunction with Sexual Responsibility Week, Feb. 8-14. The entire presentation will be broadcast on BTV, the university residences television channel. Alumni honors

-- Two Krannert School of Management alumni are listed on the Forbes Magazine Platinum list. The January issue features the 400 best-performing large companies in the United States and their chief executive officers. Karl J. Krapek, president of Pratt & Whitney and executive vice president and director of United Technologies, is a 1972 Krannert graduate and a member of the dean's advisory council. Forbes singles out Krapek for making Pratt & Whitney, the aerospace and defense division, the top performer for United Technologies in 1998. David I. Fuente, a 1969 graduate of Krannert and also an advisory council member, is chairman and chief executive officer of Office Depot Inc. The magazine says Fuente's visionary business practices have reinforced Office Depot's position as the industry leader.
