Sheep producers invited to annual lambing school

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Beginning sheep producers who attend Purdue University's Lambing School on Saturday, Feb. 20, will learn hands-on skills and production information from industry experts.

Michael Neary, sheep specialist with the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, said participants are encouraged to do more than just observe and take notes. For example, they can assist in the birth of a lamb. "They really do get hands-on experience and take a lot more away than they would by just watching," Neary said. The date for the school is selected by determining which Saturday has the most lambing activity projected.

Participants also will learn about late gestation, lactation, care of newborn lambs, health and nutrition for the flock, and management of young sheep. Neary said the goal is to give producers the skills and knowledge to achieve a healthy and productive flock.

The lambing school is limited to 40 students. Neary said the spots fill quickly, and those interested should plan to make the registration deadline of Feb. 11. The cost of $30 per person includes a noon meal and educational materials. Registration forms can be obtained from Neary at (765) 494-4849, e-mail, mneary@ansc.purdue.edu, or by visiting Purdue's Sheep Web. Follow the Lambing School link.

The school will be at the Baker-Purdue Animal Sciences Center in rural West Lafayette. It is on County Road 500 North, a mile north and 3/4 mile east of the intersection of U.S. 52 and U.S. 231.
