Lecture looks at vitamin B-6 deficiency and poverty

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- An expert on the metabolism of vitamin B-6 will give the 1999 Avanelle Kirksey Lecture at Purdue University.

Robert Reynolds will give his hour-long talk, "Prenatal Vitamin B-6 Deficiency and Poverty -- Is There a Link?" at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, in Room 218, Stewart Center.

Reynolds is an associate professor of human nutrition and dietetics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He researches the requirements and metabolism of vitamin B-6 for various populations, including pregnant and lactating women, infants and children, the elderly, and the HIV positive.

There will be a light lunch reception immediately following the seminar. The lecture and reception are free, but seating is limited. Reservations can be made with the Department of Foods and Nutrition at (765) 494-8231 or the Consumer and Family Sciences Development Office at (800) 535-7303. Reservations are requested by Feb. 6.

The lecture honors the contributions of Avanelle Kirksey, Purdue's Meredith Distinguished Professor Emerita. She retired from the Department of Foods and Nutrition in 1994, after a 33-year career. Her groundbreaking research has led to a better understanding of the relation of diet to human behavior and cognition.

The lecture series is sponsored by the Gerber Products Co., the endowment supported by Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories Inc., and alumni and friends.

Reynolds also will speak about his research expedition to the top of Mount Everest at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in Room 2280 in the Liberal Arts and Education Building. Reynolds undertook the expedition to study the effects of high and extreme altitude on energy nutrition and metabolism.
