Boys Choir of Harlem to perform Feb. 20 at Elliott

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The acclaimed Boys Choir of Harlem will take the stage at Purdue University's Elliott Hall of Music at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. The concert, part of the Lively Arts Package presented by Purdue Convocations, is sponsored by Lafayette Life Insurance Co.

Founded in 1968, the Boys Choir of Harlem provides inner city children a welcome opportunity to realize their creative potential now and throughout their lives. An example of the program's success is that 98 percent of its participants go on to college.

"We try to provide an entire environment that encourages discipline, hard work and self-respect," director Walter J. Turnbull said. Established in 1987, the Choir Academy of Harlem was a turning point in this mission. The touring ensemble of 35 is drawn from the full academy membership of 450 and, uniquely, features older tenor and bass voices as well as treble. This permits choristers to participate through secondary school and is the basis of the choir's vocal power and musical versatility.

With a repertoire embracing classical and modern music, popular song, spirituals, gospel and jazz, the Boys Choir regularly tours throughout North America, Europe and Asia, including concerts at the renowned halls of great cities, as well as before schools, churches and smaller communities. Its well-received performances are highlighted by choreography and an unerring sense of showmanship.

The choir also makes frequent television appearances and has recorded with opera divas Kathleen Battle and Florence Quivar as well as for film soundtracks such as "Glory," "Jungle Fever," and "Malcolm X."

Tickets to the Feb. 20 concert are $26, $20 and $13 for the public, $14 or $12 for Purdue students. Charge by phone at (765) 494-3933 or 1-800-914-SHOW.
