Jan. 22-March 7: Commercial Pesticide Applicator Training

Purdue Pesticide Programs and the Cooperative Extension Service are providing three core pesticide application training sessions and 11 category training sessions at Purdue for people who want to become certified pesticide applicators. Participants will discuss biology, pesticide formulations, safety and pesticide laws. The sessions are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the certification exam offered immediately thereafter. Registration is $80 per person for each program. The fee includes exam certification study materials. Parking is available in the Grant Street Parking Garage for $5 per day. Jan. 22: Ag Alumni Fish Fry

The Ag Alumni fish fry will celebrate agricultural professions and honor alumni and friends of Purdue Agriculture. To show support for Indiana's pork producers, the fish fry will serve up fried pork beginning at 11:30 a.m. Entertainment includes Buffalo Pete's Wild West Show, Purdue Pep Band, vocalists from Purdue Musical Organizations, and the Purdue Varsity Glee Club. The Certificate of Distinction also will be presented to honorees for their outstanding service to agriculture. Tickets for the fish fry are $12 and must be purchased in advance at a Purdue Cooperative Extension Office, a Purdue Agriculture department, or the Purdue Ag Alumni Association. Jan. 22: Purdue Ag Forecast

A panel of experts will discuss monetary policies and international trade's effect on the profitability of agriculture. The forecast will begin at 9:15 a.m. at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center. Invited panelists include Rep. Charles Stenholm (D-Texas), the ranking minority member of the House Agriculture Committee; Randy Green, staff director of the Senate ag committee; J.B. Penn, senior vice president of Sparks Cos. Inc.; Robert Thompson, policy adviser to the World Bank; and Purdue agricultural economist Larry DeBoer. WGN's Orion Samuelson will moderate. The event is free and open to the public. Ag forecast attendees with tickets to the Ag Alumni Fish Fry will have reserved seating at the fish fry. Jan. 25-26: Midwestern Winegrape Conference

The Heartland Grape and Wine Coalition is sponsoring this two-day conference in the Indianapolis Adam's Mark Hotel to give Midwestern grape growers the opportunity to share ideas and learn from professionals. Topics to be discussed include cold injury in grape vines, pest management, and practices to increase winegrape production. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 25 and will wrap up at noon Jan. 26. The conference will be held in conjunction with the Indiana Horticultural Congress, and participants will have the opportunity to take advantage of a trade show and educational sessions. Registration of $175 includes a handbook, four meals and reception. Lodging reservations can be made directly with Adam's Mark Hotel. Jan. 25-Feb. 5: Charting A Course For The Family Farm

Purdue Cooperative Extension specialists will hold this series of educational meetings across the state to help farmers make the most of last season's limited farm income. Longer daytime meetings will offer concurrent sessions on more specific topics. Daytime sessions are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Evening sessions are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Locations and times can be confirmed by contacting County Extension Offices. The Indianapolis Adam's Mark Hotel will be the site for this workshop aimed at newcomers to the industry and amateur apple growers who are contemplating commercial production. Topics to be covered include site selection, apple varieties, pest and disease management, tree thinning, and fruit development. This event is held in conjunction with the Indiana Horticultural Congress, and participants will have the opportunity to visit the trade show and exhibits. The cost of $50 includes printed materials and lunch. Jan. 28 : 4-H Legislative Youth Day

Selected 4-H youths from grades 9 through 12 will have the opportunity to visit the state capital to learn about the legislative process and how they can make an impact on the state's laws. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Indiana Government Complex in Indianapolis. Miss Indiana, Julianne Hackney, will be a guest speaker. Mock elections and a legislator lunch will allow the teems to meet and talk with state legislators. The event will conclude around 3:15 p.m. Early registration is requested and is $5.
