Extension helps family farms control their destinyWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- To help Indiana farmers make the most of the 1998 growing season's limited farm income, Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service specialists will hold a series of 18 educational meetings across the state Jan. 25-Feb. 4.The meetings, called "Charting a Course for the Family Farm," will deal with financial management, cost-cutting strategies and family dynamics during challenging economic times, said Marshall Martin, Purdue agricultural economist and a co-organizer of the meetings. The more comprehensive daytime meetings will start at 9 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. County Extension educators will select the content for the two-hour evening programs, based on local input. The day meetings will cover economic outlook, cost-cutting strategies for crop and livestock operations, dealing with family stress, managing family finances, and improving family communication. Afternoon topics are livestock production, especially hogs; specific crop production information; farm financial decision-making; and working with lenders and credit providers.
