This calendar lists selected Purdue events during the next four weeks. Events are free and open to the public, except where noted, and all are open to news media coverage. New or updated listings have two asterisks (**).

EVENTS

  • ** Monday, Jan. 18. Affirming the Dream IV: A Day Service. Purdue students, faculty and staff will assist numerous Greater Lafayette volunteer agencies on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Service projects will take place between 9 a.m. and noon, followed by a luncheon and Volunteer Information Fair starting at noon in the Hillenbrand Hall formal lounge. The day is an official university holiday for students, faculty and staff. To volunteer, contact the Diversity Resource Office, (765) 494-7307.

  • ** Thursday, Jan. 21. Activities carnival. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Ballrooms, Purdue Memorial Union. Purdue Student Union Board is sponsoring this event to introduce students to various clubs and activities available on campus.

  • ** Friday, Jan. 22. Ag Alumni Fish Fry. 11:30 a.m. Purdue Armory. Tickets cost $12 and must be purchased in advance at any county office of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, through any Purdue agricultural department, or by calling the Purdue Ag Alumni Association at (765) 494-8593. The event will be preceded by the Purdue Ag Forecast, a panel discussion on international trade's impact on agriculture's bottom line moderated by WGN's Orion Samuelson at 9:15 a.m. at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center. The forecast is free.

ENTERTAINMENT

  • Friday, Jan. 22. Mingus Big Band, honoring the late Charles Mingus. 8 p.m. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. Tickets are sold out. Presented by Purdue Convocations.

  • ** Saturday, Jan. 23. Purdue Jazz Festival. 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Jazz bands from 89 middle schools and high schools throughout the Midwest join guest artists, clinicians and the Purdue Jazz Band for a day of jazz competition and performance. A grand finale concert at 6:30 p.m. in Elliott Hall of Music will feature a set by the Hal Galper Trio, performances by the day's outstanding bands, and the Purdue Jazz Band joined by three soloists. Tickets are $10 for admission to all events, or $4 for each individual event, available at Purdue box offices, (765) 494-3933 or 1-800-914-SHOW.

  • Sunday, Jan. 24. "Swan Lake" by the Russian National Ballet. 3 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Tickets are $26, $20 and $13 for the public, $14 and $12 for Purdue students, at campus box offices or by phone at (765) 494-3933 or 1-800-914-SHOW. Presented by Purdue Convocations.

  • Friday, Jan. 29. Cinema Now: "Smoke Signals." 7:30 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. This 1998 Sundance Film Festival winner tells the story of two young men who, having grown up on the Coeur d'Alene Indian reservation in Idaho, set off on a road trip together. Tickets are $4 for faculty and staff, $3 for Purdue students. Presented by Purdue Convocations.

  • ** Wednesday, Feb. 3. "The King and I," the revival of the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. 8 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Tickets are $32, $24 and $14 for the public, $18 and $14 for Purdue students, at campus box offices or by phone at (765) 494-3933 or 1-800-914-SHOW. Presented by Purdue Convocations.

LECTURES

  • Thursday, Jan. 14. Purdue Galleries Brown Bag Lecture. Noon. Beelke Gallery (Room 206, Creative Arts Building 2). Colorado artist David Yust will discuss his work, which is on display through Jan. 31 in the Stewart Center Gallery.

  • Friday, Jan. 15. Wrapping With Christo and Jeanne-Claude. 7 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 202. David Yust, a Colorado artist who has worked with Christo and Jeanne-Claude on many of their wraps, presents an illustrated lecture about the projects. Yust's work is on display through Jan. 31 in the Stewart Center Gallery.

  • ** Tuesday, Jan. 19. "Addressing the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr." 7 p.m. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. Free speech by Tony Brown, host and executive producer of "Tony Brown's Journal," the nation's longest-running national black affairs television series. Sponsored by the Office of Human Relations as part of the university celebration of King's birthday.

  • Wednesday, Jan. 20. Conversations About Teaching. 3:30 p.m. East and West Faculty Lounges, Purdue Memorial Union. Speaker: Nick Rauh, associate professor of history who in 1997 was named one of Purdue's five outstanding undergraduate teachers. This presentation is sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs as part of the Focus on Teaching Lecture Series so that award-winning Purdue faculty can share their creative approaches to teaching.

  • ** Thursday, Feb. 4. Purdue Galleries Brown Bag Lecture. Noon. Beelke Gallery (Room 206, Creative Arts Building 2). Sydney Zentall, Purdue professor of educational studies and artist, talks about her work, which is on display through March 12 in the Krannert Drawing Room.

WORKSHOPS

  • ** Thursday, Jan. 21. "Picture This: Really Listening," an interactive theater and training project that models problem solving and empathy for others. 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m. West Faculty Lounge, Purdue Memorial Union. Sponsored by the Women's Resource Office. Seating is limited. To register, call the resource office at (765) 494-9879.

EXHIBITS

  • Through Jan. 22. Modern Masters: 20th Century Prints From the Permanent Collection. 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday. Krannert Building Drawing Room. Modern art movements such as Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Op and Photo Realism are surveyed, with works by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, Frank Stella, and Salvador Dali. (Gallery is closed Jan. 18 for Martin Luther King holiday.)

  • Through Jan. 31. David Yust: Inclusion Series. Stewart Center Gallery, West Lobby, Stewart Center. Yust's work is informed by the mysterious Nazca lines on the Western Peruvian Pampas, tectonic plates and continental shifts, profiles of the front range foothills, and nuances of color. Gallery reception, 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14. Gallery hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday; 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Yust will present a lecture, "Wrapping With Christo and Jeanne-Claude," at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, in Room 202, Stewart Center, and a Brown Bag Lecture at noon Thursday, Jan. 14, in Room 206, Creative Arts Building 2. (Gallery is closed Jan. 18 for Martin Luther King holiday.)

  • Jan. 15-Feb. 12. Images From Down Under: Prints from Australia and New Zealand. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Beelke Gallery (Room 206, Creative Arts Building 2). This traveling exhibit features prints and artist's books by 89 artists from 12 colleges and universities in Australia and New Zealand. Traditional approaches to printmaking from woodcuts to stone lithographs. (Gallery is closed Jan. 18 for Martin Luther King holiday.)

  • ** Feb. 1-March 12. Sydney Zentall: Light Waves. 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday. 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday. Krannert Drawing Room, Main Floor, Krannert Building. The Purdue professor of educational studies captures in oils the many moods of the sea. There will be a gallery reception 5-6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, in the Krannert Drawing Room. Zentall also will present a lecture about her paintings at noon Thursday, Feb. 4, in the Beelke Gallery, Room 206, Creative Arts Building 2.
