JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and some Purdue events during the next two weeks.

Keeping your resolution when dining out

Diet-conscious diners may find eating out tricky, because restaurants need not list nutrition information on the menu. However, if items are designated "low fat" or "heart healthy," then restaurant operators must be able to show that the items qualify for that listing, says William Evers, Purdue associate professor of foods and nutrition. He says there is a lot of flexibility in how restaurants can comply with the government guidelines. For example, a notebook of information on the fat content of all menu items that bear fat claims may be shown to consumers upon request. His advice to diners: If you're in doubt, ask.
