Purdue committee looking for Indiana-based art

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The visual arts committee at Purdue University announces its 14th annual Art in the Classroom competition, open to all artists residing in Indiana.

The purpose of the competition is to place original works of art in the university's classrooms. Indiana artists are invited to submit resumes and no more than three slides of current work to the committee by Feb. 15.

"Following a screening process, finalists will be invited to the Purdue campus to view the designated classroom sites and to prepare proposals for site-specific works," said Mona Berg, director of Purdue University Galleries. The committee will pay up to $3,000 for a single work or suite of works. The winning piece will be permanently installed in a classroom selected by the artist, and it will become part of the university's permanent collection.

All artistic media will be considered. The completed work must be wall-mountable and of a sufficient size to have a significant presence in the classroom, with a depth no greater than four inches when installed. All slides must be clearly marked with the artist's name, title of the work, medium and size.

Entries should be mailed to: Art in the Classroom, c/o Mona Berg, Purdue University Galleries, 1396 Physics Building, West Lafayette, Ind. 47907-1396. A self-addressed, stamped envelope must be enclosed to ensure the return of the slides.
