Jan. 2-3 Hoosier Sheep Industry Symposium -- For Adults &Amp; Youth

The Indiana Sheep Association, Purdue, and the Sheep and Wool Market Development Council co-sponsor this event for adults and youths at the Holiday Inn in Bloomington. The adult session will begin at 9 a.m., and speakers will discuss the future of the American Sheep Industry Association, making money with sheep and forages, the Michigan Sheep Alliance, and more. The youth session also begins at 9 a.m. and will focus on preparing sheep for show. A pizza party and swimming party will be held for youth entertainment. A recognition and awards banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. Activities planned for Jan. 3 are the Indiana Sheep Breeders Association annual meeting, breed association meetings, and the ISBA board of directors meeting. Advanced registration is $15 per person and $25 per family. Cost at the door is $20 per person and $30 per family. Registration for the banquet is $14 for adults and $7 for youth. Jan. 4-March 7: Commercial Pesticide Applicator Training

Purdue Pesticide Programs and the Cooperative Extension Service are providing six core pesticide application training sessions and 11 category training sessions beginning Jan. 4 at Purdue. Participants will discuss biology, pesticide formulations, safety and pesticide laws. The sessions are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the certification exam immediately following. Jan. 9: Making Cows Out Of Heifers

Held at the Spring Mill Inn at Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell, this program will help beef producers develop high-quality heifers and cows. Topics to be discussed include the direction in which the beef industry is headed; developing replacement heifers; and animal health. Three beef producers representing Stewart Angus Farm, Alcoa Land Co., and Roberts Farm will hold a panel discussion. The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 2:45 p.m. Registration deadline is Jan. 5, and the cost is $25. Late registration is $30. Jan. 11-15: Purdue Pest Control Conference

This workshop is designed to inform those involved in pest control about the latest technologies and control methods. Registration begins at 3 p.m. Jan. 11 Topics for the conference include exterior pest management, termite control, research developments and more. Tips on improving business and company standards also will be discussed. Continuing certification hours will be awarded toward pesticide applicator certification for those in attendance. Registration is $275 and includes course materials and evening banquet. Jan. 25-Feb. 5: Charting A Course For The Family Farm Meetings

Purdue University Cooperative Extension specialists will hold this series of educational meetings across the state to help farmers make the most of last season's limited farm income. The meetings will deal with finances during challenging economic times. Longer daytime meetings will offer concurrent sessions on more specific topics. Daytime sessions are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Evening sessions are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Locations and times can be confirmed by contacting County Extension Offices. Jan. 28 : 4-H Legislative Youth Day

4-H youths from across Indiana will have the opportunity to come to the state capitol and discuss issues such as alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Youths, from grades 9 to 12, will learn how they can make an impact on the laws that affect Indiana and about the legislative process. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Indiana Government Complex in Indianapolis. Miss Indiana, Julianne Hackney, will be a guest speaker. Mock elections and a legislator lunch will allow the youths to meet and talk with state legislators. The event will conclude around 3:15 p.m. Early registration is requested. Jan. 25-26: Midwestern Winegrape Conference

The Heartland Grape and Wine Coalition is sponsoring this two-day conference in the Indianapolis Adam's Mark Hotel to give Midwestern grape growers the opportunity to share ideas and learn from professionals. Several important topics in the winegrape industry will be discussed. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. Jan.25 and will wrap up at noon Jan. 26. The conference will be held in conjunction with the Indiana Horticultural Congress. Registration, which includes a handbook, four meals and the reception, costs $150 before Jan. 10 and $175 after that date. Lodging reservations can be made directly with Adam's Mark Hotel.
