High-tech job fair to help slow the state's 'brain drain'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Indiana's small to medium-sized companies will get a shot at recruiting some of the state's brightest students at the first "High-Tech Job Fair for Indiana Companies."

The job fair, sponsored by five schools at Purdue University, will be Friday, Feb. 12, in the Purdue Memorial Union ballrooms. A brunch and informational workshop will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., and the fair will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Chris Neilands, associate director of placement for the School of Management and co-coordinator, said the fair is targeted at Indiana companies that may not typically recruit on campuses.

"We encourage companies that have not recruited at Purdue in the past to participate in the fair and learn more about the various degree programs and effective college recruiting strategies," she said. "Both Purdue University and state officials realize that a large percentage of college graduates leave the state once they receive their degree. The fair will allow students the opportunity to explore positions that exist within the state, and it will provide companies the opportunity to recruit these students."

The focus is to attract companies that place a significant emphasis on technological skills and that can offer challenging career opportunities within Indiana.

The fair is open to undergraduate and graduate students from the Schools of Agriculture, Engineering, Management, Science and Technology.

Companies that wish to participate must register in advance and pay a $50 fee. Participation will be limited to the first 100 companies that sign up by the Jan. 12 registration deadline. A Web site is available for more information and to register for the job fair.
