Isom chosen as interim vice president and dean

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Gary Isom, associate vice president for research and development and professor of toxicology at Purdue, will serve as the university's interim vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School, effective Jan. 1.

Isom will succeed Luis M. Proenza, who is leaving Purdue to become president of the University of Akron.

"Gary Isom is a highly respected researcher and teacher, as well as a seasoned administrator," Robert Ringel, executive vice president for academic affairs, said in announcing the appointment. "As one of the key people in the recent growth of research support at Purdue, he is ideally positioned to provide leadership during the transition to a permanent vice president and dean."

Purdue President Steven C. Beering commented: "Dr. Isom has a profound understanding of the relationship between graduate education and research. He views them as complementary activities within the fabric of a great university. We are fortunate to have an individual of his stature in position to assume leadership of these important programs."

Ringel said action on a search for Proenza's successor will be taken during the upcoming spring semester.

Purdue spends about $185 million a year on research. The money comes from the federal and state governments, industry, foundations and individuals. More than 400 research laboratories are on the West Lafayette campus.

The Graduate School enrolls more than 6,000 students in West Lafayette.

Isom came to Purdue in 1980 as an associate professor of toxicology. Before that he taught at Idaho State and Washington State universities. From 1987 to 1995, he was director of the Division of Sponsored Programs.

He has grants from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Army to conduct research on the chemical-induced neurodegeneration, and he has published research papers on the relationship of chemical exposure and Parkinson's disease.

He is a member of Rho Chi, Blue Key and Sigma Xi honorary societies and a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He also is a member of the Society of Neuroscience, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the Society of Toxicology and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
