Faculty and staff honors:-- Joseph Francisco, professor of atmospheric chemistry, has been named Fellow of the American Physical Society for his "fundamental contributions to the theoretical and spectroscopic elucidation of critical transient species in atmospheric chemical processes." His research focuses on understanding the chemical processes of the atmosphere and has been applied to problems such as identifying chlorine reservoirs in the stratosphere and developing alternatives to current refrigerants. Francisco has dual appointments in the Departments of Chemistry and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.-- John G. Graveel, professor of environmental soil science, received the 1998 Agronomic Resident Education Award from the American Society of Agronomy. The award recognizes original and significant research and an outstanding ability to inspire sound thinking, objectivity, integrity and cooperation. Graveel's research focuses on soil management. -- "The Academic Marketplace" by Reece McGee, professor emeritus of sociology, will be reissued this spring by Transaction Books of Rutgers University in honor of the book's 40th anniversary. Originally published in 1958, the book is an all-time academic best-seller, having sold in excess of a quarter-million copies. -- Ahmed Sameh, head of Purdue's Department of Computer Sciences, has been named Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery -- the highest rank of membership in the organization. The ACM Fellows program was established in 1993 to honor outstanding members for their achievements in computer science and information technology and for their significant contributions to the mission of the organization. Sameh's research interests include numerical linear algebra with emphasis on parallel computing.
Promotions:-- Candiss Baksa Vibbert, assistant dean of Purdue's Graduate School since 1990, has been named associate dean.
