Penny Wars bring in thousands for United WayWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Penny Wars in Purdue University residence halls raised almost $8,000 for the 1998 United Way campaign. The annual fall event is coordinated by the Residence Hall Council. McCutcheon Hall triumphed over 11 other residence halls again this year by bringing in more than 20 percent of the Penny Wars' $7,946 total. Last year's Penny Wars' total was $5,622. The event is a two-stage process. First, each floor competes against the other floors in a residence hall. Positive points are scored for pennies and dollar bills, which students throw into their floor's glass jar in the main lobby. Negative points are scored for silver change, which students from other floors throw into their rivals' jars. The contest is won by points -- not by the amount of money in the jars. "Many students quickly master Penny War strategies. They hoard their pennies until the end of the competition week so other floors don't know they have them. Floors sabotage rival floors by throwing in rolls of quarters to wipe out positive penny points," said Lisa Tetzloff, director of residential life and Residence Hall Council adviser. "It's extremely competitive, because many residence halls offer their own pizza party prizes to floor winners." The second stage of the Penny Wars is a battle between residence halls. The total amount of money collected by each hall is divided by the number of students who live in the hall. The hall with the highest average donation per student gets its name inscribed on a plaque in Smalley Center. CONTACT: Tetzloff, (765) 494-7187; e-mail, lmt@purdue.edu
