EDITORS: This Purdue calendar lists selected events on Purdue's West Lafayette campus or involving people or programs off campus during the next five weeks. Events are free and open to the public, except where noted, and all are open to news media coverage. New or updated listings have two asterisks (**).

All events in this calendar, plus many others, are listed in Purdue's on-line calendar.

EVENTS

  • Tuesday, Nov. 24. Learning Center open house. 8:30-11:30 a.m. Room 3299, Liberal Arts and Education Building.

  • Thursday, Nov. 26. International Students Thanksgiving Dinner. 4 p.m. International Center, 523 Russell St. Tickets are $3 and must be purchased by Nov. 24 at the center.

  • ** Thursday, Dec. 3. Raising of the Great Hall tree. 11:30 a.m. Great Hall, Memorial Union. Physical facilities staff will erect a 30-foot-tall donated tree, which is traditionally the largest indoor, natural tree in Indiana. Purdue staff members will use a lift to decorate the top half of the tree. Members of the Purdue Student Union Board will decorate the bottom half on Friday, Dec. 4. After the tree is decorated, visitors can enter a "Guess the Lights" contest to win a free dinner, a Beanie Baby and free textbooks for a semester. The drawing will be Dec. 11.

  • ** Saturday, Dec. 5. The Student Union Board sponsors Breakfast with Santa. 8:30-10 a.m. La Posada dining area on the ground floor of the Purdue Memorial Union. The Union Market will feature breakfast specials of pancakes, French toast stick or waffle and sausage with drink for $1.50.

  • ** Saturday, Dec. 12. Women of Vision will sponsor a campus celebration of Kwanzaa. 3 p.m. Black Cultural Center, 315 University St.. The celebration will include symbolic presentations of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, musical performances and traditional African-American foods.

  • ** Sunday, Dec. 20. Fall Commencement. Ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Tickets necessary for admission. Six tickets are issued free to each candidate for a degree. 9:30 a.m. ceremony is for Schools of Consumer and Family Sciences, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Veterinary Medicine. 2:30 p.m. ceremony is for Schools of Agriculture, Education, Management, Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences, Science, and Technology.

ENTERTAINMENT

  • Friday, Dec. 4. Free recital by students in the Applied Music program. 7 p.m. Anniversary Drawing Room, Memorial Union.

  • Friday, Dec. 4. Cinema Now: "Washington Square." 7:30 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Tickets are $4 for faculty and staff, $3 for Purdue students. Presented by Purdue Convocations.

  • Friday, Dec. 4. Black Cultural Center Cultural Arts Festival. 8 p.m. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. The four BCC performing arts ensembles -- the Jahari Dance Troupe, the Black Voices of Inspiration Choir, the New Directional Players and the Haraka Writers -- will perform. Admission is $3 for students, $5 for the public.

  • Saturday, Dec. 5. Free concert by the Purdue Jazz Band and the American Music Review. 8 p.m. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center.

  • Sunday, Dec. 6. Free concert by the Purdue Symphony Orchestra. 7 p.m. Long Center, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette.

  • ** Monday-Friday, Dec. 7-11. Sounds of the Season. 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. each day. Great Hall, Purdue Memorial Union. Concerts will feature local choirs, bands and soloists. Santa and his elves will also be on hand to visit and pass out candy canes. Sponsored by Purdue Student Union Board.

  • Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 10-12. Winter Dance Works, a concert by the Purdue Repertory Dance Company. 8 p.m. each evening, with a 3 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Experimental Theatre, Stewart Center. Tickets, available at the Loeb Box office, are $6 for students; $8 for the public; and $3 for children 12 and under.

  • Friday-Sunday, Dec. 11-13. PMO Christmas Show. Elliott Hall of Music. Show times are 8 p.m. Friday; noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday. LECTURES

  • Tuesday, Nov. 24. Conversations About Teaching. 3:30 p.m. East and West Faculty Lounges, Purdue Memorial Union. Speaker: Fred Lytle, professor of chemistry and the 1996 Indiana Professor of the Year. This presentation is sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs as part of the Focus on Teaching Lecture Series so that award-winning Purdue faculty can share their creative approaches to teaching.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 1. Women's Studies Brown Bag Series. Noon. Room 1284, Liberal Arts and Education Building (Dean's Conference Room). Christine Braunberger, a graduate student in the American Studies Program, will present "Monster Beauty: The Aesthetic Choices of Tattooed Women."

  • Wednesday, Dec. 2. Jewish Studies Noon Lecture and Discussion Series. 12:30 p.m. Anniversary Drawing Room, Purdue Memorial Union. Topic: "To See Feelingly: Moral (In)sight in Arthur Miller's 'Homely Girl, a Life' and 'Broken Glass.'" Speaker: Professor Thomas P. Adler, head of the Purdue Department of English.

  • Thursday, Dec. 3. Philosophy Colloquium Series. 4:30 p.m. Room 117, University Hall. Topic: "Systematicity and Self-Knowledge of Reason in Kant." Speaker: Manfred Baum, University of Wuppertal.

  • Friday, Dec. 4. Krannert Executive Forum. 11:30 a.m. Krannert Building Auditorium. Speaker: Arvind M. Korde, vice president and general manager, Commercial Steering Systems, TRW Steering, Suspension and Engine Group, Lafayette, Ind. Topic: "Learning Lean Production -- The Real Truth."

  • ** -- -Tuesday, Dec. 8. Jewish Studies Lecture Series. Noon. Room 180, Grissom Hall. Topic: ''The Peace Process: From Oslo to Wye.'' Speaker: Eitan Naeh, counsul for press and information at the Consulate General of Israel in Chicago.

EXHIBITS

  • Through Nov. 25. Women and Flight. Stewart Center Gallery, West Lobby, Stewart Center. Part of the Purdue Aviation Celebration. This exhibit features photographs of 37 contemporary American women involved in aviation and space exploration. The portraits are by National Air and Space Museum staff photographer Carolyn Russo. Gallery hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday; 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

  • Through Nov. 30. Artwork by Delphi Art Club. Watson's Crick Gallery (Room 1-125, Lilly Hall of Life Sciences). 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

  • Through Jan. 22. Modern Masters: 20th Century Prints From the Permanent Collection. 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday. Krannert Building Drawing Room. Modern art movements such as Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Op and Photo Realism are surveyed, with works by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, Frank Stella, Salvador Dali and Philip Pearlstein. (Gallery is closed Nov. 25-27 for Thanksgiving, Dec. 14-Jan. 10 for semester break, and Jan. 18 for Martin Luther King holiday.)

  • Through Dec. 11. NAEA Student Show. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Beelke Gallery (Room 206, Creative Arts Building 2). Members of the National Art Education Association student chapter display their recent work. (Gallery is closed Nov. 25-29 for Thanksgiving.)

  • ** Dec. 1-11. Kwanzaa exhibit, presented by The Women of Vision. Room 118, Purdue Memorial Union. 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The exhibit will introduce visitors to the Kwanzaa celebration and the seven principles that guide the African-American holiday.

  • Dec. 7-Jan. 31. David Yust: Inclusion Series. Stewart Center Gallery, West Lobby, Stewart Center. Yust's work is informed by the mysterious Nazca lines on the Western Peruvian Pampas, tectonic plates and continental shifts, profiles of the front range foothills, and nuances of color. Gallery reception, 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14. Gallery hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday; 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Yust will present a lecture, "Wrapping With Christo and Jeanne-Claude," at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, in Room 202, Stewart Center, as well as a Galleries Brown Bag Lecture at noon Thursday, Jan. 14, in the Beelke Gallery (Room 206, Creative Arts Building 2).
