Purdue trustees appoint deans at Calumet, IPFW

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, 11/20) ratified the appointment of three long-time Purdue educators as deans at Purdue Calumet and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

The board also renamed the Department of Technology Graphics to the Department of Computer Graphics Technology, to better reflect the curriculum and research there.

At the Calumet campus, Gloria Smokvina of Crown Point has been named to head the Schools of Professional Programs, while Dennis Korchek of Munster becomes the dean of the School of Technology. At IPFW, G. Allen Pugh of Fort Wayne is the new dean of the School of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science. All three have served since 1997 as acting or interim deans of those respective schools.

Smokvina, a Purdue Calumet faculty member since 1970, is a professor of nursing who has directed Purdue Calumet's nursing program since 1987. As dean, she will head the Schools of Education, Management and Nursing.

From 1983 to 1987, she was project director and coordinator of the Purdue Calumet-based master's degree program in nursing. Before coming to Purdue Calumet, she spent four years on the nursing faculty at the University of Evansville.

She earned a nursing diploma from the St. Margaret Hospital (Hammond) School of Nursing, a bachelor's degree from DePaul (Ill.) University, a master's degree in medical-surgical nursing from Indiana University, and a doctorate from Wayne State (Mich.) University.

Since 1987, she has been active in the Statewide Taskforce on Nursing in Indiana. She also serves on the advisory board of the Northwest Center for Medical Education-Indiana University School of Medicine in Gary; the governing board of St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers Inc.; the advisory board of Horizon Career College in Merrillville; and the Healthy East Chicago Community Board, East Chicago & St. Catherine Hospital.

As dean of the School of Technology at Purdue Calumet, Korchek will supervise four academic departments: Information Systems and Computer Programming, Manufacturing Engineering Technologies and Supervision, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Construction Technology.

A professor of construction technology and a registered architect, he served on the Purdue Calumet faculty from 1973 to 1976 and rejoined the faculty in 1981. Except for one year, he has headed the Department of Construction Technology since 1982. He also has taught on the faculty at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

He has represented Purdue Calumet in various outreach initiatives. They include: the Indiana Workforce Development Task Force-Region IA; Indiana School to Work Committee-Region IA; and the Indiana Council of Vocational Administrators. He also was chairman of the Northwest Indiana Vocational Education Consortium.

Pugh, professor of industrial engineering technology at IPFW, has been a faculty member since 1981 and has served as chairman of manufacturing technology, director of organizational leadership and supervision, director of industrial engineering technology, and acting chairman of engineering.

He received doctoral and master's degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue. His areas of technical expertise are in statistical process control, simulation and selective assembly. He has been a long-time member of the International Board of Editors for the Journal of Computers and Industrial Engineering. In addition, he received the 1997 and 1981 Magoon award for teaching.

As interim dean, he led the school through re-accreditation, streamlined academic programs, and initiated more distance education.

His school offers degree programs in computer science, engineering technologies and engineering.
