BCC festival to showcase culture

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Dance, drama, readings and song are in the mix with the Black Cultural Center's 1998 Cultural Arts Festival entitled "Showcase No. 98 -- A Mosaic of Culture."

As the last major event of the BCC's annual Cultural Arts Series, the festival is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center. It features the BCC's four student performing art ensembles -- the Black Voices of Inspiration, Haraka Writers, Jahari Dance Troupe and New Directional Players.

Tickets cost $3 for students and $5 for the public and can be purchased at the Loeb Box Office or by phone at (765) 494-3939.

"The 85 student ensemble members have been working hard to nurture their cultural and artistic development in preparation for this event," said Howard Lucas, BCC assistant director and artist in residence for the Jahari Dance Troupe.

"The show is highlighted by a selection of inspiring songs guaranteed to make the audience stand up and join in. Our three one-act plays focus on comedic timing, the readings take a closer look at new beginnings, and the dance troupe concentrates its efforts on artistic expression and communication."

Lucas acts as festival project coordinator while working closely with other BCC artists-in-residence -- Don Burrus with the New Directional Players, Tyson Simms with the Haraka Writers, and Marshall White with the Black Voices of Inspiration.

The last event in the BCC's 1998 Cultural Arts Series is a chance to attend a final study session at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10. The study session at the BCC will be followed by a study break featuring cards, dominos, games, music and fun.
