Cold weather gets wildlife up close and personalWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Plummeting outdoor temperatures may prompt field mice and other small mammals to share your warmer winter quarters.Take some time to board up holes and cracks that allow rodents easy access, and make sure clutter is picked up and put away. Stack firewood on a platform and store pet food and winter bird feed in rodent-resistant containers, says Judy Loven, director of Indiana Wildlife Services, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. If you feel you need to get rid of the pests, make sure you read and follow label directions on poisons and traps. Wildlife Services has a new toll-free hotline at (800) 893-4116 for Indiana residents who have questions about close encounters of the wildlife kind. CONTACT: Loven, (765) 494-6229
