Mow your leaves

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Just leave the leaves and mow your yard, advises a Purdue University turfgrass specialist. Leaves can be shredded with the mower and left on the lawn, where they'll break down to next to nothing, says Purdue Cooperative Extension specialist Zac Reicher.

He notes that it's a lot easier than raking, but he says you have to keep mowing: The more the leaves are chopped up, the faster they'll break down. If you feel you can't let leafy things lie, they can be collected, shredded and tilled under in the garden or composted.
