JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and some selected Purdue events during the next two weeks.
Kids explore space and science at Fall Space DayOn Saturday, Nov. 14, more than 200 grade-school children will meet an astronaut and explore their interests in space and science during Fall Space Day at Purdue. Students and their teachers will build rockets from household items, learn about the basics of aeronautics, and participate in a role-playing session of a simulated shuttle mission. Astronaut and Purdue alumnus Mark Brown will give opening remarks at 9:30 a.m. in the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall. Activity sessions begin at 10:45 a.m. in the Brown Laboratory of Chemistry and the Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry. Student participants will come from Indiana cities including Attica, Frankfort, Kokomo and Greater Lafayette. Sponsored by the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Purdue chapters of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Sunday-Tuesday, Nov. 8-10.Eleven leaders in various professional fields will visit Purdue for the 49th Old Masters program to share their experiences with students. During their stay on campus, the Old Masters visit classrooms and residence units, attend informal breakfasts, luncheons and dinners, and engage in candid discussions with students. A public reception for all the Old Masters will be at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in McCutcheon Hall. Wednesday, Nov. 11.George Curry, editor and chief of Emerge Magazine and a regular panelist on "Lead Story," a news analysis program on the BET television network, lectures about "What African-Americans Must Do to Help Ourselves" at 7 p.m. in Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Curry will be available to answer questions from journalists at 6:30 p.m. in Room 204, Stewart Center. His talk is co-sponsored by the Historically Black Institution Visitation Program and is part of the Black Cultural Center Cultural Arts Series. Tuesday-Wednesday, Nov. 17-18.Child's Play Touring Theatre will conduct three "Writing Is ... Child's Play" workshops as a part of the Purdue Convocations' Arts Education program. The schedule: 1 p.m. Tuesday (11/17) at Pine Village Elementary School; 9 a.m. Wednesday (11/18) at Otterbein Elementary School; and 2 p.m. Wednesday (11/18) at Hershey School. Students are introduced to the basics of the writing process and actors perform outstanding examples of children's writing in a presentation that demonstrates the limitless subject matter available to young authors. (The company will return Feb. 10 for a full performance at 10 a.m. at Long Center.) TV cameras, photographers and reporters are welcome.
