Homecoming king, queen named at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University students Christopher Gurrie of Downers Grove, Ill., and Heidi Fernandez of Los Altos, Calif., were named homecoming king and queen today (Saturday, 10/24) during halftime of the football game against the University of Illinois.Gurrie, 5532 Washington St., is a sophomore majoring in communication and law. He is a graduate of Downers Grove South High School. Fernandez, 1194 Laureles Drive, is a senior majoring in education. She is a graduate of St. Francis High School. The homecoming king and queen contests are sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board. The other king finalists were: Jason Doherty, a senior from Munster, Ind., majoring in telecommunications and computer technology; Brandon Gough, a senior from McHenry, Ill., majoring in sales and sales management; Josh Rutherford, a senior from Montmorenci, Ind., majoring in restaurant, hotel and institutional management; and Michael Sprinkle, a senior from Carlisle, Ind., majoring in agricultural communications. The other queen finalists were: Jessi Lemming, a senior from Oxford, Ind., majoring in public relations; Holly Senchak, a senior from Munster, Ind., majoring in technical graphics; Diana Thomopoulos. a senior from Burr Ridge, Ill., majoring in elementary education; and Amy Usleman, a senior from Columbus, Ind., majoring in pharmacy. The finalists in each contest were selected from a field of 22 candidates through a campuswide vote. The finalists were interviewed by a panel of judges. Voting results and judges' evaluations determined the winners.
