Purdue students recognized for honors, achievements

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eleven Purdue University students recently were recognized for their achievements.

-- Ten sophomores in the School of Liberal Arts have been named Thayer Scholars. The new scholarship program provides $1,000 awards. The 1998-99 recipients are Lori Bailey, Fort Wayne; Jennifer Anne Dziak, Michigan City; Christine Haskell and Emmett Koehler, both of Lafayette; Ruth Jewett, Griffith; Kasia Marie Mutz, Plainfield; Elizabeth Pomery, West Lafayette; Jeremy Aik Siong Sim, Singapore; Amy Southwood, Maryville, Tenn.; and Gregory Stasi, Downers Grove, Ill. The scholarships were established by a gift from Purdue alumnus Warren P. Thayer Jr. To be eligible for the scholarship, students had to finish their first year with a 3.7 or better grade point average, take a variety of challenging courses, participate in extracurricular activities and write an essay on the most important thing they learned during their first year at Purdue.

-- Julie Lynn Roller, Peru, a senior in the School of Industrial Engineering, has been recognized with several scholarships this year for her academic excellence and leadership skills. She received the Boeing Co.'s $2,500 manufacturing and production engineering scholarship for 1998; earned scholarships from Crowe Chizek Co. and Frito Lay Inc., each worth $500; and received the $2,000 Dwight D. Gardner Scholarship from the Institute of Industrial Engineering.
