Purdue Theatre presents 'Mother Hicks'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Both children and their parents can find something to appreciate in the Purdue Theatre Second Season presentation of "Mother Hicks" Oct. 29-Nov. 1.

The play by Suzan Zeder is set in a southern Illinois town during the Great Depression. The main characters are Mother Hicks, whom most people in town believe to be a witch; Tuc, a deaf young man who collects discarded goods; and Girl, an orphan who struggles between rebelling and wanting to belong.

Performances will be presented in the Black Box Theatre in Creative Arts Building No. 3 at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29 and 30. Matinees will be offered at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1.

Shauna Colclasure Meador, a candidate for a master's of fine arts degree, directs the production. She has been involved in the production of two other Suzan Zeder plays. "There is a lot of diversity in a Suzan Zeder script, with many types of characters. It's suitable for children and adults alike, so it can't be described as just another children's play," Meador said.

This production features the acting and design talents of both undergraduates and first-year graduate students in the Purdue theater program. Tickets are $5 at the Loeb Box Office or by phone at (765) 494-3933.

A "Mother Hicks" Web page, created for a 1995 production at the University of Texas at Austin, includes information about the play, an interview with Zeder, photos from the play, and a list of other resources. It is at http://www-stat.cc.utexas.edu/cofa/theatre/hicks/#Information.
