Theatre shifts gears with 'How I Learned to Drive'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- On the heels of its rendition of the comedy "Private Lives," Purdue Theatre presents the 1997 Pulitzer Prize-winner for drama -- Paula Vogel's "How I Learned to Drive" -- Nov. 12-22 on the Experimental Theatre stage in Stewart Center.

Eric Sydnor, a candidate for a master of fine arts degree, will direct the play -- one of its first university productions in the nation. The play will have its professional Indiana premiere in January.

"This is a wonderful play, universal in its depiction of the process many of us go through as we deal with the events of our lives," Sydnor said. "I'm thrilled to be directing it now, just months after it won the Pulitzer Prize, and presenting this new work to audiences in this area."

"How I Learned to Drive" depicts a tale of survival as seen through the lens of a troubled relationship between a young girl and an older man. It is the story of a woman who learns the rules of the road -- and life -- from behind the wheel.

Members of the cast include two third-year master of fine arts students and five actors new to the graduate program at Purdue.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Nov. 12-21, plus a 2:30 matinee on Nov. 15 and a 6 p.m. performance on Nov. 22. (There is no performance Monday, Nov. 16.)

Tickets cost $7 for students and senior citizens, $11 for others, at the Loeb Box Office or by phone at (765) 494-3933. For discounted group ticket sales, call (765) 494-3084.

Patrons can take their "Private Lives" ticket stubs to the box office and purchase prorated season tickets through the run of "How I Learned to Drive." The remaining shows in Purdue Theatre's mainstage season are "Into the Woods" by Stephen Sondheim in February and Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" in April.

A sneak preview of "How I Learned to Drive" will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11. Tickets for the preview cost $4.50.
